A man arrested on Friday on charges of killing a sheriff's deputy in a hit-and-run was in the country illegally, it has emerged.
Deputy Michael Hartwick, 51, was killed instantly when a front-end loader plowed into him on Thursday evening.
Hartwick was standing on the hard shoulder of the I-275 when the vehicle driven by Juan Ariel Molina-Salles, 32, drove into him at 10:40pm in St Petersburg.
Molina-Salles, a Honduran construction worker, rang his friend Elieser Aureilio Gomez-Zelaya in tears and said what had happened.
Gomez-Zelaya then helped him, hiding his construction vest and helmet in the woods, and allowing Molina-Salles to run away.
Molina-Salles had previously been intercepted entering the US illegally across its southern border in October 2021, and sent back to Mexico.
But he had since been able to re-enter the United States unhindered at an unknown date, as President Biden faces mounting pressure over the historic numbers of people crossing the border illegally.

Elieser Aureilio Gomez-Zelaya, also from Honduras and in the country illegally, has been charged with assisting with a crime
He was booked into the Pinellas County Jail on Friday and faces a charge of leaving the scene of a crash involving death, a first-degree felony that carries a maximum prison sentence of 30 years and a mandatory minimum of four years.
Gomez-Zelaya is facing a charge of being an accessory after the fact, a felony.
Bob Gualtieri, sheriff of Pinellas County, said that both men, born in Honduras, were in the United States illegally and working under assumed identities.
Molina-Salles crossed into Eagle Pass, Texas in October and was expelled to Mexico but then crossed again and found work in Florida.
Gualtieri said other workers at the scene also provided false names.
'They were hindering the investigation, not giving us answers to the questions that we needed,' said Gualtieri.

He said that Hartwick was a 19-year veteran of the sheriff's department, the father of two adult sons, and praised him for his work ethic.
'Mike was a good guy, a good cop,' said Gualtieri.
'He did his job.'
Hartwick's colleagues paid tribute to him on Friday with a procession through the streets.
A memorial has sprung up to the well-liked sheriff.

A teenager who had dreams of becoming a bull rider and competing in the United States died from a heart attack after falling off a bull at a rodeo in southeastern Brazilian state of São Paulo.
Thiago Castilho, 18, was participating at an event in the São Paulo city of Ribeirão Preto on Thursday night when he suffered the fall.
Multiple videos surfaced online that show Perez mounted on the bull for nearly eight seconds as the animal was trying to buck him off.
The teen ultimately lost his grip on the bull rope and appeared to hit his neck on the bull's horn as he was falling to the ground.
Two men rushed to his side as he was lying on the ground unconscious while another individual chased down the bull.

Castilho was rushed to a local medical facility and went into cardiac arrest early Friday morning.
The incident is being investigated by the Ribeirão Preto Civil Police as a suspicious and accidental death.
Jean Carlos Castilho told Brazilian news outlet G1 that his son was only 11 years old when he started riding horses and by the age of 16 was riding an ox.
As soon as he turned 18 in February, Thiago Castilho began participating in bigger rodeo shows that were held in several São Paulo municipalities, including his hometown of Brodowski.
Thiago Castilho, 18, had dreams of one day traveling to the United States to compete in bull riding events.
He started riding horses as the age of 11 and he was just 16 when he started riding an ox
Thiago Castilho was warned multiple times by his father about the dangers that came along with riding bulls.
However, the 18-year-old loved the sport so much that he once told him, 'If I died one day, I'm going to die happy, I'm going to die riding'
Despite warning his son about the dangers that came with riding bulls, Thiago Castilho was willing to put his life on the line for the sport he loved.
'Unfortunately, that's what rodeo is all about.
It's a dangerous sport. I always said to him: 'My son, stop it,'' Jean Carlos Castilho recalled.
The mourning father said his son refused to quit, telling him, 'If I died one day, I'm going to die happy, I'm going to die riding.'
Local rodeo announcer Ronald Xavante honored Thiago Castilho with a video Friday, calling him a rising star in the sport.
'Thiago was an 18-year-old who, since he was a child, has been awakening the dream of being a rider,' Xavante said.
'His dream came true, so Thiago had been making great presentations and was arousing interest in several national rodeo teams.'

SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina (AP) - Bosnia will hold a presidential and parliamentary ballot on Oct.
2 amid ethnic tensions and a row over an election reform.
The state election authorities on Wednesday scheduled the vote despite demands from Bosnian Croats that the new election rules be agreed upon first.
Bosnia consists of two semi-autonomous regions: a Bosnian Serb-dominated entity and a joint Bosniak-Croat one.
The two are bound together by joint central institutions and all important decisions must be backed jointly.
The complicated network of institutions was established in a peace agreement in 1995 that ended Bosnia's ethnic war, which killed more than 100,000 people and displaced millions.
Bosnian Croats have since claimed discrimination in the entity with the Bosniaks, who are mostly Muslims.
Croat officials and Croatia have demanded that the voting system be changed to make sure that Bosnian Croats alone choose Croat representatives.
Bosniak officials have denied the claims but talks on the election reform have been stuck. Bosnian Croat politician Dragan Covic warned in a letter that calling the election in such a situation presents a "threat to peace," the regional N1 television reported.
Bosnian authorities also have yet to secure funding for the October ballot.
Some 3.3 million voters will choose the three members of Bosnia's multi-ethnic presidency, the central Bosnian and the parliaments of the two entities, as well as the president and vice-president of Republika Srpska, the Serb-run entity.
Tensions between Bosnia's ethnic groups have been simmering since the 1992-95 war.
There have been fears that the war in Ukraine could trigger conflict in the volatile Balkan country where Bosnian Serbs maintain close links with Russia.
